The birth chart shows what is promised. The Dasha shows when. Parashara describes many Dasha systems, but Vimshottari ("120-year") is the one almost every Indian astrologer uses as the main timing tool.

Total: 120 years. Nobody goes through all nine in a normal lifetime. Where you start decides which ones you get.
Where your sequence starts
- Find the Moon's Nakshatra at birth.
- Its ruling planet is your first Mahadasha.
- How far the Moon has already moved through that Nakshatra decides how much of the first period is left at birth (the balance of Dasha).
Example: the Moon is at 10° Cancer, in Pushya (Cancer 3°20′–16°40′, ruled by Saturn). It has covered 6°40′ of Pushya's 13°20′, exactly half. So half of Saturn's 19 years, 9½ years of Saturn, remain at birth. Then comes Mercury (17 years), then Ketu (7), then Venus (20), and so on.
Levels: Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantardasha
Each Mahadasha (major period) is divided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods). They're in the same order, starting with the Mahadasha planet itself. Each Antardasha is divided again into Pratyantardashas.
Length of an Antardasha = (Mahadasha years × Antardasha years) ÷ 120. Example: Saturn–Saturn = 19 × 19 ÷ 120 ≈ 3 years. Venus–Sun = 20 × 6 ÷ 120 = 1 year.
When a reading says "Venus–Saturn", it means Venus Mahadasha, Saturn Antardasha. The Mahadasha sets the overall theme for years; the Antardasha decides which part of it is active now.
How to judge a period
A Dasha planet gives the results of:
- The houses it rules from your Lagna.
- The house it sits in.
- Its strength: exalted, own sign, debilitated, combust, and its D9 position.
- Planets conjunct or aspecting it.
- Its Nakshatra lord: a planet delivers partly through the lord of the Nakshatra it sits in.
Example: for Aries Lagna, Saturn rules the 10th (career) and 11th (gains). A strong Saturn Mahadasha is traditionally read as a period of steady career building, not the disaster Saturn's reputation suggests. For Taurus and Libra Lagna, Saturn is the Yogakaraka (ruling both a Kendra and a Trikona), and its 19 years can be the best of the person's life.
The Antardasha planet's relationship to the Mahadasha planet also matters. Planets in Kendras or Trikonas from each other tend to cooperate. Planets in the 6th/8th or 2nd/12th from each other tend to create friction.
Dasha plus transits
Astrologers use a simple principle: the Dasha shows whether an event is possible; transits show when. A marriage indicated by a 7th-lord Antardasha usually happens when Jupiter and Saturn also touch the 7th house or its lord. That's how questions like marriage timing and career changes are approached.
Common worries
- "Rahu Mahadasha is dangerous." Rahu gives the results of its sign lord and house. For many people it's a period of ambition, travel and rapid change, sometimes very successful.
- "My Dasha changes next month and everything will change." Changes at the start of a period (the Dasha sandhi) are usually gradual, not a switch flipping overnight.
- Different websites show different dates. Check the birth time and ayanamsa. Small differences move Dasha dates by weeks or months.
