Ask a Vedic astrologer "What's my sign?" and you'll get more than one answer. You have a Lagna (ascendant), a Rashi (Moon sign) and a Sun sign, and in Jyotish the order of importance is exactly that.

The Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It changes about every two hours, so it is the most personal point in the chart.
- It fixes the 12 houses. Whatever sign the Lagna is becomes the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. That decides which planet rules your career, marriage and money houses.
- It describes your body, temperament and general direction in life.
- The Lagna lord (the planet that rules the Lagna sign) shows where your energy naturally goes. Lagna lord in the 10th house points to a work-centred life. In the 7th, relationships and partnerships take centre stage. In the 12th, travel, foreign places or spiritual life.
Because the Lagna needs an accurate birth time, a wrong time gives a wrong Lagna, and then every house reading is off.
Rashi: your Moon sign
Your Rashi is the sign the Moon was in at birth. The Moon represents the mind, so the Rashi describes how you feel and react day to day.
- Indian daily and yearly horoscopes use the Rashi, not the Sun sign.
- Transits are read from the Moon. Sade Sati is the 7½ years when Saturn moves through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon.
- Your name syllable and Guna Milan compatibility come from the Moon's Nakshatra.
- Chandra Lagna: astrologers often re-read the chart treating the Moon's sign as the 1st house. It's especially useful if your birth time is uncertain, because the Moon sign rarely changes within a day.

Sun sign: less central than you might expect
The Sun shows your soul, father, authority and vitality. It matters, but Jyotish doesn't build the reading around it. Some astrologers use Surya Lagna (reading houses from the Sun) as a third view, mostly for career and status.
Why your Vedic sign differs from your Western sign
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the stars. They're about 24° apart today (the ayanamsa), so most people's Vedic planets are one sign earlier than their Western ones.
That explains a very common question: "Why don't I relate to my Leo Sun?" In the Vedic chart, that Sun is often in Cancer. It also works the other way: people who never felt like their Western sign often recognise themselves in their Vedic Lagna or Moon.
Which one should you use?
- For a full reading: start from the Lagna.
- For transits, Sade Sati and daily horoscopes: use the Moon sign.
- Unknown birth time: use the Moon sign and read a Chandra Kundli.
- To confirm a big theme: see whether it repeats from all three (Lagna, Moon and Sun). A theme that shows up from all three is strong.
